The Senior Manager of Payroll Operations and People Analytics is responsible for leading enterprise payroll operations while leveraging workforce data to drive business insights and strategic decision-making. This role oversees payroll processing across a complex, multi-entity manufacturing portfolio, leads payroll integration efforts for acquisitions, and develops scalable analytics capabilities that provide leaders with visibility into labor costs, workforce trends, and organizational performance.

 

This leader combines deep SAP Payroll expertise with a hands-on approach to standardizing processes, integrating acquisitions, and driving operational efficiency. Success in this role requires the ability to navigate complexity, influence across business units, build scalable payroll and analytics solutions, and serve as a trusted partner to field and corporate stakeholder.

 

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Team Management:

  • Lead and manage the payroll team, providing coaching, development, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, customer service, and operational excellence.
  • Establish performance metrics and service standards to ensure accurate and timely payroll delivery.

 

Payroll Operations & Leadership

  • Oversee end-to-end payroll processing across multiple entities and states for hourly and salaried employee populations.
  • Establish scalable processes that balance centralized governance with local operational flexibility.
  • Partner with HR, Finance, and Operations leaders to align payroll operations with organizational objectives.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor on payroll-related matters, labor costs, workforce trends, and compliance requirements.
  • Communicate payroll policies, procedures, and updates to stakeholders and employees.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to payroll accuracy, timeliness, compliance, and service delivery.

 

SAP Payroll Ownership

  • Serve as the enterprise subject matter expert (SME) for SAP Payroll (ECP).
  • Drive standardization of payroll processes within SAP while accommodating business unit requirements.
  • Lead system enhancements, troubleshooting, testing, and optimization efforts.
  • Ensure payroll systems are maintained for accuracy, efficiency, scalability, and compliance.
  • Analyze payroll data to support budgeting, forecasting, labor planning, and financial reporting.
  • Partner with IT and business stakeholders to identify opportunities for automation and process improvement.

 

Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A)

  • Lead payroll integration efforts for newly acquired businesses.
  • Evaluate payroll systems, processes, controls, and risks during due diligence activities.
  • Develop and execute integration plans that align acquired businesses with enterprise payroll standards.
  • Transition of acquired entities into standardized or hybrid payroll models.
  • Stabilize payroll operations post-acquisition while ensuring business continuity and employee satisfaction.

 

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws and payroll regulations.
  • Maintain strong internal controls, audit readiness, and documentation standards.
  • Lead internal and external payroll audits.
  • Oversee payroll tax filings, W-2 processing, year-end activities, and regulatory reporting.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and proactively implement required updates.

 

Process Improvement & Strategy

  • Identify and implement opportunities for automation, standardization, and operational efficiency.
  • Develop and execute a roadmap for payroll modernization and process optimization.
  • Leverage payroll and labor data to improve cost visibility and support business decision-making.
  • Establish and maintain payroll policies aligned with best practices and organizational objectives.
  • Build and lead cross-functional partnerships with Finance, IT, Business Analytics, HR, and Operations teams to align priorities, optimize business processes, and deliver enterprise-wide solutions.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance employee experience, strengthen controls, and improve service delivery.

 

Field Partnership & Customer Service

  • Serve as a trusted partner to field HR, operations, and business leaders by providing responsive support, practical solutions, and payroll expertise.
  • Build strong relationships with field personnel to understand operational challenges and proactively address business needs.
  • Champion a customer-service mindset across the payroll function, ensuring a positive experience for employees and stakeholders.
  • Act as an advocate for field teams, ensuring payroll processes and reporting solutions support operational success.

 

People Analytics

  • Leverage payroll and HR data to provide executive stakeholders with strategic insights into labor costs, overtime trends, and workforce planning.
  • Define, track, and report on core consolidated HR metric definitions, ensuring uniform measurement of key items like headcount, turnover, overtime, and labor costs across the entire enterprise portfolio
  • Establish uniform corporate data-collection and compliance-reporting schedules, reducing manual corrections and eliminating discrepancies between disparate legacy or business-unit systems.
  • Create secure, role-based reporting dashboards and self-service analytics tools, training HR and operations partners on standardized tools to minimize ad-hoc, siloed data manipulation.

 

 

 

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of payroll regulations, tax laws, wage and hour requirements, and Department of Labor regulations.
  • Strong expertise in SAP Payroll (ECP).
  • Experience administering equity awards and/or prior compensation experience preferred.
  • Proven payroll leadership experience in manufacturing, multi-site, or complex organizational environments.
  • Experience operating within multi-entity organizations.
  • Demonstrated success supporting acquisitions and system/process integrations.
  • Strong understanding of hourly payroll, timekeeping systems, labor compliance, and workforce analytics.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong leadership, communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to influence and build relationships across all levels of the organization

 

Experience

Education

Minimum of 7 years processing payroll and an additional minimum of 5 years in a payroll manager role.

Minimum Bachelor’s Degree (Accounting, Business or related Field)

CPP Certification Preferred.
