The Production Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and management of the Printing Press. Reporting directly to the Plant Manager and working closely with the Business Unit Director, the Production Supervisor provides day-to-day leadership and direction to production employees, coordinates workflow and staffing, monitors productivity and quality, ensures compliance with safety and operating procedures, and works to maximize equipment utilization and production efficiency.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Production Operations & Workflow Management
- Manage the daily operations of the Printing Press and associated production activities.
- Plan and coordinate production activities to meet customer, production, quality, and scheduling requirements.
- Establish work priorities and assign employees to equipment, jobs, and tasks, based on production needs, employee qualifications, and operational requirements.
- Monitor press performance, production rates, downtime, waste, quality, and overall equipment effectiveness.
- Carry out directives and priorities established by the Plant Manager while exercising independent judgment in the day-to-day supervision and management of assigned production employees.
- Identify production bottlenecks, equipment issues, quality concerns, and workflow problems and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Review production information and records to identify opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency, quality, and equipment utilization.
- Ensure production activities are performed in accordance with established operating procedures, quality requirements, and customer specifications.
- Monitor material usage and production waste and take appropriate action to minimize unnecessary loss.
Employee Supervision & Leadership
- Recommend hiring, disciplinary action, promotion, and termination decisions for assigned production employees; such recommendations are given particular weight in final personnel determinations.
- Conduct or participate in interviews of candidates for production positions and provide input on selection decisions.
- Exercise discretion in day-to-day staffing decisions, including approving time-off requests, adjusting shift assignments, and reassigning employees between tasks based on production needs.
- Provide coaching, training, guidance, and corrective direction when performance or conduct does not meet expectations.
- Provide the Plant Manager with regular updates regarding production performance, staffing, quality, safety, equipment, downtime, and other operational matters.
Qualifications and Skills
- 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing production environment, preferably in printing.
- Previous leadership experience preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of printing press operations, production processes, workflow, quality standards, and equipment utilization.
- Ability to read and interpret production schedules, work orders, job specifications, operating procedures, and quality requirements.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify production issues and determine appropriate corrective actions.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in managing day-to-day production activities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with all departments.
- Ability to recognize when an issue requires escalation and communicate significant production, safety, quality, equipment, staffing, or employee concerns to the Plant Manager in a timely manner.
