Ubique Technologies, a division of Patrick Industries, is seeking an experienced and dynamic CAD Design Manager to lead our CAD Design Team in Clanton, Alabama – commutable from Montgomery, Prattville, and the Southern Birmingham region. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in managing CAD design and revision projects using composite materials and CNC technology. This role is directly responsible for leading the team that designs, develops, and improves the components, systems, and applications of our technologies in the marine market and beyond. They will work closely with our business leadership, sales team, and factory team to ensure that our products meet all safety, quality, and performance expectations. In addition to interactions with all levels of the factory team in Clanton Alabama, this role will be customer-facing and will require occasional travel to customer facilities for design and product reviews, installations, or troubleshooting.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of CAD designers at varied experience levels, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment to achieve project goals and professional growth.
  • Project Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of CAD design projects, ensuring alignment with timelines, budgets, quality standards, and customer expectations.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Interact with leadership, suppliers, customers, and factory teams alike to ensure project specifications are met or exceeded. Present design concepts, progress reports, and technical documentation to internal teams, customers, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Design Oversight: Manage the creation and review of detailed 2D and 3D models, drawings, and specifications for marine vessels, ensuring compliance with industry standards and customer requirements.
  • Manufacturing Expertise: Apply knowledge of CNC technology and material science to guide the design team in developing marine kits and components for open mold and infusion based (VIP) applications.
  • Software Proficiency: Directly utilize and ensure team proficiency in AutoCAD, Mastercam, Rhino, and the Microsoft Office Suite of software programs.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with all functional teams in the factory, sales & customer service to ensure seamless integration of designs into all manufacturing processes through to the customer.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement improvements in design workflows, tools, and methodologies to enhance quality, efficiency, and innovation. Collaborate with business leadership and Group or Pillar resources to drive effective deployment of changes without disruption to safety, quality, delivery, or cost.
  • Compliance & Standards: Ensure all designs meet regulatory requirements, safety standards, and industry best practices, particularly relative to marine manufacturing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Material Science, or related technical field
  • 5+ years of experience in CAD design, preferably in the marine industry, with 1 or more years of direct leadership experience
  • 2+ years of customer-facing experience
  • Proficiency with AutoCad, Rhino, Mastercam, & the MSOffice suite of programs
  • Ability to self-direct without supervision
  • Leadership and team-building skills with the ability to motivate and develop talent
  • Excellent organization and project management skills
  • Disciplined & methodical problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt in a fluid environment
  • Strategic mindset to complement tactical, technical, and analytical ability
  • Work well with a variety of personalities in a collaborative and highly interactive team environment

 

Physical Demand and Conditions:

  • Typical office environment with frequent factory engagement
  • Frequent sitting and walking as well as extended periods standing or moving on the factory floor
  • While in the factory you must be able to work in a non-climate-controlled environment where ambient air temperatures will be comparable to outside air temperatures
  • Must be able to bend at waist and knees or stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must be able to freely walk around and climb on and off a variety of surfaces if needed
  • Must be open to periods of varied travel 10%-25% as required
